Meet Akemi
Akemi Horii, LPC NCC
Founder of Soul Awakening, LLC
I’ve always been deeply interested in people’s stories — what shapes them, how they find meaning, and how they navigate change. My own journey has taken me across cultures and disciplines, from studying anthropology, archaeology, ancient languages, and art history, to living and working in places as varied as San Francisco, California, London and Oxford in the United Kingdom, and the Middle East. These experiences taught me that no matter where we come from, we all seek connection, purpose, and peace.
Eventually, my path led me to counseling. I earned my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at St. Bonaventure University, building on earlier studies in anthropology, biblical languages, and Islamic art. Now, as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Ohio and National Certified Counselor (NCC), I provide individual psychotherapy and psychoeducation to adults through Soul Awakening, LLC.
My Therapeutic Approach
I believe that therapy is about more than managing symptoms — it’s about honoring your unique story and helping you reconnect with your authentic self. My approach is client-centered, multicultural, and eclectic, drawing from:
EMDR (trauma-focused, trained member of EMDRIA)
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in partnership with Journey Clinical
This blend allows me to tailor therapy to your needs, whether you’re working through trauma, navigating a transition, or seeking clarity in life’s direction.
A Global Perspective
Originally from Japan, I’ve lived, studied, and worked across multiple cultures and industries — from finance and technology to education and nonprofit community services. These diverse experiences help me understand the complexity of identity, belonging, and change, and they inform the way I show up for my clients today.
Outside the Therapy Room
When I’m not working, I love exploring self-care practices that nurture both body and soul, and spending time with my family and our dog in the beautiful landscapes of southwest Ohio.
Supervision
I am clinically supervised by Margaret Pennington, MA, LPCC-S.
